NETAA Newsletter August 2002
Greetings fellow archers. This is the last newsletter you will get
before this season’s World Championship. It is very important that you
get your invitation/registration form in to the office ASAP (if you
haven’t already!).
All registrations should be in by August 1st, as the shoot schedule
and line time assignments will be set on or about the 4th so notifications
can mail out around the 5th. Those who send in their registrations late
will not have the flexibility of requesting specific line times, nor
will they get their confirmations in the mail prior to the Championship
(they will have to either call the office for line times or show up
early Friday at the Championship to get their registration package).
Once again, it is important to our efforts to increase sponsorship support
of the tour to have as many people participate in the Championship as
possible, therefore we want to encourage all our members to attend,
and bring a friend or two.
2002 OUTDOOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP- The 2002 tournament tour winds
up the weekend of August 22-25 at Gilbertsville, New York at our eighth
annual Championship. We hope to see all our members there, as well as
a lot of friends and potential new members (you do not have to be a
member to shoot the bowhunter Proficiency Round or the guest division
in the 3D or 540 Rounds). Those that have shot at Gilbertsville in the
past know what a great shoot we’ll have! The course is very "user friendly"
with wide lanes and fairly flat going. Those that have had difficulty
on the "hilly" courses we’ve shot the past few years will be pleasantly
surprised. As always, every 3D contestant in the Championship must shoot
20 targets Friday and another 20 targets on Saturday. The five top contestants
in each class after forty targets advance to Sunday’s final 20 target
round. On Sunday we will use a "shotgun" start with each group comprised
of the five competitors in their respective class. The target assignments
and score cards will be distributed at the registration area first thing
Sunday morning. In addition to awards (huge trophies), we give cash
prizes in all adult classes (both open and money division). In the open
division the amount of the cash distributed is equal to the total shooters
fees collected during the tour in that class, plus $5.00 per contestant
at the Championship. This total is divided according to the number of
contestants in the class, one place per three contestants (max. ten
places per class). The checks usually aren’t large, but the top shooters
will win more than they paid to register! The more qualifiers we have
in the tour, and the more contestants participating in each, the more
cash we will be able to distribute at the Championship in future years.
In the money division we distribute checks based on the payback percentage
of the registration fee for the Championship.
GRAND CHAMPIONSHIP- Once again we will announce both a male
and female overall Grand Champion for the Outdoor Championship. The
Grand Championship is determined by adding the total score from the
540 Round and the first two days of the 3D Championship. Only men shooting
the orange stakes, and ladies shooting the green stakes, are eligible.
Only contestants registered in both Championship events are eligible.
There is no additional registration fee (or cost) to participate in
the Grand Championship awards program. Full details are on the web site.
The men’s Champion will be awarded a seven day trophy bowhunt in Newfoundland
for moose, a $1,000.00 bonus check, a custom jacket, and a huge trophy.
The ladies Champion will receive a $500.00 bonus check, custom jacket,
and huge trophy. In addition to these awards, the two Grand Champions
will also receive the cash awards in their respective 3D and target
events. The men’s Champion could walk away with over $6,000.00 in cash
and prizes from the weekend!
BOWHUNTER PROFICIENCY ROUND- In addition to the Championship
3D and 540 Rounds (both require pre-qualification and pre-registration),
we will once again have a 30 target unknown distance bowhunter Proficiency
Round open for the whole weekend. Membership and/or pre-qualification
are not needed to shoot this round, so bring your friends! You can shoot
this round for practice, for fun, or for the awards (patches). You can
shoot it as often as you like, so there will be plenty of opportunity
to shoot arrows over the three days! Registration is at the event ($10.00
per round).
NEW ENGLAND TRIPLE CROWN- The results of this year’s triple
crown follow, however I wanted to announce as soon as possible the painful
decision that has been made to abandon this mini tour for the 2003 season.
Until further notice, the New England Triple Crown will be replaced
with a New England 3D Championship. This will be a one weekend event,
and will be held in Brattleboro for 2003 (see the shoot schedule for
exact dates).
This decision was made as a result of the continued decline in numbers
of archery contestants in the six state New England area. The IBO abandoned
the idea of a New England Triple Crown years ago for this same reason,
while we stubbornly persisted to offer the three event mini tour, hoping
the numbers would recover. They haven’t, and it just doesn’t make sense
to keep loosing money promoting a tour in a region that just won’t support
it. So the archers in New England that have supported our tour can continue
to qualify for the Worlds, and to maintain at least two championship
level shoots in New England (one indoor 450 Championship, one 3D), we
will offer the one New England Championship.
Brattleboro was selected as the host site for a number of reasons.
First, they have hosted the triple crown longer than any other club.
Second, they have the most local archers competing in the tour. Finally,
being he closest to New York, they offer the best potential to draw
additional contestants from outside New England (which will be needed
to make the shoot a success!). Both other host sites (Jaffery and Groton)
that have done excellent jobs hosting NETAA events in the past, will
be offered State level qualifiers if they choose to stay active in the
NETAA tour.
To answer the next question, "Yes, we will consider bringing back the
New England Triple Crown if/when participation in the New England Championship
reaches a minimum of 200 contestants."

ANNUAL PIG ROAST- To increase the fun and camaraderie at the
annual Championship, we have made arrangements with the folks at Gilbertsville
Rod & Gun to put on a fireside pig/beef roast Friday night. We picked
Friday because all our contestants will be in town that night, and it
would be a great excuse to all get together for some fun during the
weekend. We know a lot of you form small groups at local camp grounds
during the weekend for this very reason, and that these "get-togethers"
are the high lite of the weekend. We figured we would expand on the
idea so everyone could participate in the fun.
Gilbertsville is willing to put on a first class meal with all the
trimmings (and most of you know they are famous for their food!) for
$12.50 per person if we can give them an advance meal count. They can
only feed 200 people, so it will be important to get your tickets early.
The tickets are going to be available through the NETAA office on a
first come first served basis. You need to order them through Corinna
at the office and she will keep a list and put your tickets into the
registration package you pick up on site upon your arrival. You do not
have to be a member or a competitor to buy a ticket, so your family
and friends can join you for the party if they get their orders in on
time.
Dinner will be served at 6:00PM and they have promised a big camp fire
for the event. This will take place by the meeting tent, where we will
also have a D. J. When you order your tickets state Pork or beef. If
this works out well we will try to expand on the concept for next year
and see just how much of a party we can turn this into for our NETAA
family

HUNT RAFFLE BLACK BEAR HUNT We just received word that the good
folks at Northway Outfitters in New Brunswick have donated a fully guided
and baited fall black bear hunt to NETAA. The hunt will be for the September
(bow only season) 2003 season, and is for five full days and six nights.
They have great references, and are well aware of what needs to be done
to get bowhunters a good clean shot on a trophy bear. The hunt is valued
at $1,700.00 CND. Full details will be available at the Championship.
We are going to raffle this hunt off as a fund raiser for the Aim For
College Foundation. All proceeds will go to fund Tuition Voucher Certificates
for next year’s Championship. Tickets can be purchased at the Championship,
or by mail ahead of time for $5.00 per ticket. This is a great chance
to get that black bear trophy for just five bucks, and help the youth
program at the same time. Good luck! Don’t miss the best Championship
yet!
